Today’s challenge is a book that makes me sad. There are plenty of books that fall in this category, but the one I want to comment on today is The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. I’ve only read the book once, but I remember being immensely moved by the boy’s innocence about what is going on in the camp. His innocence is perpetuated by the fact that he misunderstands the words spoken by adults in his life. He simply wants to play with the little boy in the “striped pajamas” on the other side of the fence. I don’t particularly remember how the book ends, so I can’t ruin it for you, but I do remember it is sad.
This is also one of those books that are better as a book than the movie. The movie is touching, but in the book, there is dramatic irony in that the reader knows what’s happening on the other side of the fence before the boy does. That’s what makes this book so sad.
