Or this heart?

The Bible says that “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?” (Jeremiah 17:9).

But it also instructs us to ” love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.” (Deuteronomy 6:5).

So the heart is wicked and deceitful but that is where we’re supposed to love God from?

Also Psalm 64:6 points out that “human mind and heart are cunning.”  But still we’re supposed to use these two organs to love God?

Matthew pointed out that “For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander.”  (Matthew 15:19).  God knows this is how our hearts are because 1 Samuel 16:7 reminds us that ” People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

So how does all of this line up?

It seems to me that God knows just how deceitful and wicked and cunning and full of evil our hearts are, but yet somehow he still loves us and our hearts.  That’s why he offered a way to escape from our hearts.  That’s why we talk about giving our hearts to Jesus, because Jesus is the one that can cleanse our hearts.  With God’s help our hearts can be clean.  But that requires a lot of trust in God and a willingness to give up your heart to God.

Just a few thoughts on this Friday morning.
